Fall is officially here! There is a chill in the air and it is getting dark much earlier now. And the holiday season is almost upon us. But with the holidays comes lots of sugary treats that could impact more than just your scale. We want to help offer something that doesn’t contain lots of refined sugar and is easier on blood sugar levels but is still every bit as delicious. Here is our real food version of apple crisp.
Sugar and your immune system
Eating too much sugar can impact your immune system function, leaving you more susceptible to invading bacteria and viruses. And those grams of sugar can add up quickly! Studies have shown that eating as little as 75 grams of sugar can lower immune system function for up to five hours. While that seems like a lot of sugar it isn’t. That is the equivalent of 2 cans of a regular soft drink. So indulging in all of the sugar-filled holiday foods and beverages could be making it much easier for you to catch a cold, the flu…or worse!
Real food apple crisp
Our apple crisp recipe calls for whole ingredients. In place of using white sugar, we use coconut sugar. Coconut sugar is a low-glycemic option. Low-glycemic sweeteners don’t cause blood sugar to spike and crash the way conventional sugar does. It makes this dessert a better option for those who have blood sugar concerns.
Many people have issues with grains. So we’ve made this apple crisp gluten and grain-free. You can also make this dairy-free by using coconut oil in place of butter. This recipe is healthier than full-sugar versions. It’s perfect for your next holiday gathering. Your family and friends will enjoy all of the flavors with no drain on their immune systems.
Real Food Apple Crisp
- 5 medium apples peeled, cored and sliced
- 1/2 cup butter or coconut oil softened
- 3/4 cup coconut sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut or almond flour
- 2 tbsp water
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
- Place peeled and sliced apples into a greased 8×8 baking dish.
- Sprinkle water over the apples.
- Generously sprinkle cinnamon over the apples.
- In a medium mixing bowl combine butter, coconut sugar, and flour and mix with a pastry blender.
- Pour coconut sugar and flour mixture over the apples and press down gently.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
